Review of Sandpoint, Idaho

Quality of Life
Star Rating - 1/21/2006
The following commentary is coming from a native Californian who has lived in the likes of Santa Cruz, San Diego and Lake Tahoe -- resulting in tough reference points. Sandpoint is charming and not unlike Tahoe City maybe 30 years ago but for its climate and demographic. If you come, come with plenty of indoor hobbies, a love for and means to travel (to seek Vit. D), and a work-at-home profession.
There are many, many grey days here with only a brief summer (2 - 2.5 month) window to truly enjoy the outdoors. There is little if any economy here at present, partially due to local business tax laws coupled with the demographic. While this trend is generally improving, it will always be struggling due to extreme seasonality.
There are a few (counted on one hand) quality places to dine- namely Ivano's, Arlo's & Trinity, but absolutely nowhere to attain quality produce and fish. The nearest Trader Joe's, I'm afraid, is Seattle.

The positives... close to Canada and Montana for mountain exploration. Coeur D'Alene and Priest Lake, ID are an hour's drive and charming get aways. It's pretty, affordable (but appreciating fast) and sparsely populated. Schweitzer Mtn. can provide for winter recreation.
