Review of Savannah, Georgia

Stay away from Savannah!!!!!
Star Rating - 10/3/2006
I am a Savannah native. I am 37 years old now and boy has it changed! It was Utopia growing up there. I have great memories, but in the past 15 years, it has become a living nightmare of crime and racism. Racism in the fact that if you are of the caucasian persuasion, you are mistreated everywhere you go by African Americans and I'm not the least bit racist. This is a fact. It makes me sad because Savannah has become one of the most dangerous and hateful cities you will ever live in. My parents are selling our family house of 47 years because their lives are in jeapordy just going to the corner store. I fear for their lives. It's not fair!!!! Life is absolutely unbearable there. I've noticed in the older neighborhoods that there are incredible amounts of homes for sale that haven't been on the market in forever. I moved away years ago and now I'm trying to get my parents out. It's like escaping a third world country.I'm not kidding!! It's out right hate in your face where ever you go in that town and you risk your life walking anywhere and at anytime. It's so sad for families like mine who have been there forever are jumping ship like rats from a sinking ship. It's really that bad.
What angers me the most is how I see shows that glamorize it like "Paula Dean" the famous southern cook on the Food Network. I've also seen shows on the Travel Channel that make it seem wonderful. What makes me depressed is that it used to be like that 30 years ago, but no more. They fail to mention that walking in broad daylight in the beautiful historic district, you could catch a bullet and lose your life. It's a nightmare and a climate of hatred that I will never return to once my parents escape the brutality that is Savannah. Believe me! I am a true native. Stay away! Checking the crime statistics doesn't even begin to cover what really goes on there. think about what isn't reported. Check out also the Monday mroning paper there. What is reported will astound you.

I am visiting here and immediately I notice that racism is still very much alive . Confederate flags etc . Symbolic racism is so apparent . It’s disgusting actually . I don’t blame them for sticking up to this . Gross .
