This review mirrors my time in Savannah. I worked w/ some good people at Memorial Hospital, but nearly all of my coworkers wisely lived on the south side of the city. This is the newer part, and a universe away from living in the city proper. There is a palpable fear when you live or walk in the Historical District. I once asked a police woman how to get to Memorial when I first arrived. I was on my bike, and needed to go from downtown through a bad area. She told me not to bike there. In fact, she told me twice w/ a very serious look on her face, and this was in broad daylight! Rental prices are sky high and you always have to watch your back. I loved the appearance of Savannah, and the river front area was neat, but decided to leave due to the crime. Why live like that if you don't have to? It also needs to be said that racial relations are tense, the police are ineffective and corrupt, and the same goes for the local politicians.
