Good, Bad, and Ugly

Pros: Parts of the city are absolutely beautiful like no other. Southern hospitality is definitely here.....if you have good neighbors. Beach, golf, parks, music, museums, festivals, St. Patrick's Day...

Cons: Race problems not being worked on or addressed ON BOTH SIDES. It may not be perfectly evident until you live here for a while, but do not be fooled. The subject gets brought up occasionally by "church leaders" etc and never worked on. The poverty rate here is a staggering 21.8% as of 2013. Most of this is concentrated around the Historic District and Southside among African Americans, many of whom come from fatherless families - no family structure or values- leading to school dropouts, violent crime, and a sense of entitlement to government assistance as a lifestyle. I am white and have several African American acquaintances personally and professionally. If people could just learn to start talking to one another congenially some progress could be made, but here in SLOWVANNAH, both sides are too lazy to care. Oh and if you move here form someplace else (doesn't matter where from) you will hear the word "Yankee" get tossed around in that ridiculous Southern fashion with a smile or chuckle like "I'm just kidding, but really I'm not." What these idiots don't realize is that people who move here from other places actually SEE the beauty this city has the potential of attaining, and they invest HUGE amounts of money starting businesses, restoring and beautifying, (especially in the Historic District where crime is high and the natives have given up and moved away from long ago... White Flight). Government corruption, ridiculous voting districts, and poor representation among demographics are a problem too. Just Google "Willie Lovett, Otis Johnson, Rochelle Small-Toney" and you will start to get a picture of it all. My apologies for the rant...I won't move away (even though I am a two-time crime victim, one involving a gun). There are a lot of of positives for Savannah, but just driving around and seeing what's going on makes me sad. Wake up Savannah, and put your BACK into working on these things.

It’s come a long way. I didn’t move here a decade ago because of the crime. The police are young, former military, sharp and very much in top of things. The crime is the same as any other city . The city is beautiful, for the most part clean with exception of some trash thrown on the ground and broken glass by mainly people drinking . alcohol. The squares are well kept and beautiful from every angle. I’m here almost two years and love it with except the extreme heat during certain months.

came here for a temporary stay during the pandemic. To work as a dishwasher and rent a room. Received job offer from a Florida based chain restaurant. A nightmare, co worker was a pot head, attempted to assualt me several times. By accidentally bumping into me as was focused on a task. I was stationary, without communicating, excuse me, reaches right in front of my face. I had my back turned, charges up behind me in frantic pace. Intentional! There were issues about unsanitary dishes going out onto the tables. He felt threatened by a new hire, reverted to control tactics such as thug mentality, insubordination. Trying to draw me into a physical or verbal confrontation. That was my personal experience in the restaurant industry in Savannah. I witnessed a 5 person fight outside the backdoor of another restaurant. Police showed up 30 minutes later, no arrests. I witnessed a ' mental ill' man living on the streets assault a group of peace demonstrators, charge by running up on and diving punch to the back of a head!. Ellis Square, broad daylight, security cameras, security guard sitting at a desk 50 feet away had a clear view. Didn't even get up ! I walked in to the office, wondering if a guard was present. Asked " did you see that " yeah , I'm checking the camera now. I noticed nobody out of 30 witnesses made a phone call. The police never showed up. perpetrator fled on foot. Seen the same man several times with days and weeks after incident. Not to mention aggressive panhandlers. Like riding up on bikes behind tourists. Trash every where, mostly locals with georgia plates just pitch fast food bags and drinks right out the window. Honk horns repeatedly at tourists driving slow. Cursing profanities like I will run you over! Often Won't yield to pedestrians with kids and elderly. Every sort of traffic violation, illegal turns while your in the cross walk. Dogs litter on sidewalks is common in front of restaurants. Flies everywhere from the trash and sweltering heat , especially in alleys behind restaurants is bad . Mosquitoes ...
