Review of Savannah, Georgia

for the most part, the economy is horrible!!!!!

This is the south, as a matter of fact, it's the deep-south. There are (in my humble opinion) very few educated ppl in this town and I think that is some of the cause of the lopsided economy. Savannah thrives on tourism and service, which is fine if you're a college student like myself, who may not mind waitressing etc. However, when you have ppl over the age of 45 who are still doing that, then there might be a little problem there. I realize ppl work whatever/however they can, but SAV seems to have more of this than their fair share.
Savannah is such a cute city. River Street is awesome, not super-fabulous, but its cool if you're into bar hopping, club hopping, live entertainment, restaurants, "cruises"...especially after-dark. You'd want to be leaving around sundown if you're bringing kids down there. Please don't be one of those idiot adults who think it's cool to have your kids down there after dark.
The pay is pretty bad, be lucky if you find a job paying 9 or 10 bucks an hour. There is no major university here, so SCAD, Armstrong and Savannah State are the only schools of choice. And forget about a community college, they only have a technical college, and half the crap they offer isn't even accredited (be careful). On a bright note, GEorgia Tech has a campus here offering civil/env, electrical/computer, and mechanical engineering.

If YOU:

are a college student or college age this is probably a decent place for u.

If you have kids, this is not a good place for you, the schools suck! i believe chatham county has the lowest rank of all the counties in GA.

if you have a degree, go to ATL...the job market sucks, the economy is catered to tourism. There aren't many companies here, Gulfstream-Aerospace is about it, not much else here

if you're into the bohemian thing, then savannah is probably for you, check out the SCAD area!

if you're gay, savannah is sooooooo for you. I was so amazed at the amount of gay ppl here!

IF YOU'RE WORRIED about crime, then sav is not for you BUT......IF YOU KNOW HOW TO NOT GO WHERE YOU SHOULDN'T BE ANYWAY, then you'll be fine...Savannah is no different than any other city. If you're not into the gang/thug whatever than you'll be fine. If you're stupid, then that's something else. Stay on the southside.

If you're not interested in having a career (unless you work at gulfstream), then SAV is for you. I've found that there are a lot of "jobs" rather than "careers". no real opportunity for advancement.

My main problem with Savannah is that it has a REAL problem with uneducated people. With schools like Johnson HS, Savannah HS, Beach HS it's no wonder ppl are so....uneducated. And being that Savannah is majority black, the majority of these uneducated ppl are black. Even though there's an HBCU in Savannah State, go figure. Local gov should do a better job in attracting businesses here, but most businesses won't come because of the lack of an education pool. They should turn that savannah-tech into a community college, somehow make those three loser high schools somewhat better, pass out condoms to all of them so they won't ignite a cycle and promote and support higher education. Ok, I'm being silly but I'm not. Something needs to be done quick. Anytime you have a mayor named "Otis" you know he's old school, and I think it's time for some new blood here in Savannah.

I've lived here for a year, I'm 27, and I'm a black female. (to understand where i'm coming from).

I'd like to add that there are quite a few great schools in the public school system (May Howard Elementary, Charles Ellis, Oglethorpe Charter, Savannah Arts Academy, etc.) and that Johnson HS has the IB Program. The problem isn't that the education isn't available to them, it's that the parents don't care to seek it out for them.
