It's a BLUE area in a BLUE state.

I've lived in the White Oak area of Silver Spring for 37 years. First, I would never live anywhere but a blue-blue state. Yes, traffic can be a nightmare and the sprawl is appalling, but that goes for all of Montgomery County. Driving along Rockville Pike is enough to depress anyone. Typical American ugly. White Oak is the step-child of Montgomery County and it's where almost all of the subsidized housing is found. So, crime can be higher than say in Bethesda or Chevy Chase, but the area is still safe in general. I like the area where I live because it's not homogenized. Bus and metro are easily accessed. D.C., and all of its treasures, is very close by. Thankfully.
