Spartanburg is an energetic college community with an extension of the University of South Carolina which grants 4 year degrees as well as some graduate degrees. Additionally, it is home to two small liberal arts colleges (Wofford College and Converse College) with excellent reputations. The "ARTS" are alive in Spartanburg, particularly with the construction of the Cultural Center slated to open Fall of 2007. The Spartanburg Little Theatre was formed in 1946, Ballet Spartanburg was formed in 1966, the Spartanburg Repertory Company has been in existence for 20 years providing operas, operettas, and musicals, and the Spartanburg Youth Theatre is in its 35th year. Additionally there is the Greater Spartanburg Philharmonic and the Converse Symphany Orchestra which are very professional. The Petrie School of Music is part of Converse College and provides the community with approximately 150 FREE concerts, recitals, performances, etc. throughout the year. There are several art museums, as well as small galleries. For the sports fan, the Carolina Panthers have their summer training camp at Wofford College, and practices are open and free to the public. History abounds in this area dating back to the 1700s and the Revolutionary War. The weather is generally delightful, although maybe a bit warm during the summer, but rarely snows in the winter. But we are only 1 1/2 hours from Asheville, NC which is in the mountains and near to the Biltmore Estate and the Blue Ridge Parkway as well as several ski resorts. I chose to retire here although I knew noone, and have found the community welcoming as well as relatively inexpensive, but rich in culture and easy to get around.
