Dying Town - Literally
Star Rating - 3/18/2013
This place is full of nothing but old people and rednecks. They have no idea what the rest of the world is like because they are very isolated geographically and extremely close minded and parochial. There is actually a fairly strong base of manufacturing businesses in the area, but the old people treat the young people like crap, so anyone that is even somewhat talented or intelligent just goes to college and never comes back. All that is left in town is bitter old people and younger unskilled poor people that make a new generation of welfare babies after they get home from the bars.

There was recently an article in the local paper about the school district starting a preschool for lower income children. In that article they stated that 81% of children under the age of 5 would qualify as "low income." That gives you a pretty good idea of what the future of the town is shaping up to be. It will get even older and even poorer. This is proof that when I say most younger semi-intelligent people leave town, I am fairly correct.

Aside from the dying (literally) population, and the leftover poor white trash, the weather really sucks. The sun shines every now and then from June until August, then it is cold and cloudy for "spring" and "autumn." Winter lasts from the last week of October until late March. It is not unusual to see snow on the ground from October until April. January and February are brutally cold.

The infrastructure sucks, there are no major highways or airports around, and satellite is the only way to get anything that resembles modern TV service. Cable internet is available in some areas, but don't rely on it too much if you need to telecommute.

The area is really nice in the summer, but the culture of old people hating the younger generation has gone on so long that they are becoming successful in ensuring the complete death of the town. Businesses will inevitably start to move out, not because this is necessarily a bad place to do business, but because the (old people in) town have decimated the human capital element needed to sustain a decent economy.
