State College is a mess. The borough will ticket you for parking in front of the house you own (even if you do not have a private driveway), we rival Seattle in number of gray days per year, the winters are unbelievably harsh, and there is virtually no diversity.
As for restaurants, Red Lobster was voted the the #1 place to dine in State College last year...need I say more?
The students will steal your patio furniture, wake you up at 3:00 AM, even enter your house if possible, proceed to get sick, refuse to leave because they think it's their house, and then pass out drunk on the floor. (This has actually happened more than once to different families here.)
And don't bother calling the police for noise violations...the never write them up. If they did, they would activate a point system that is supposed to be enforced to control problem-rental properties in residential areas.
It may be that you have so many papers to publish, etc. that you won't have time to be social. fine. but if you want anything resembling a social life, look to another college town.
