I live in colorado springs. I am married with an autistic child. I am a black female disabled veteran ( I was in the Air Force) my husband is in the Army. We have lived here for 3 years And I love the scenery but it is hard to find jobs and the rental and housing is sky high. I am an army bratt! I started school in Germany and graduated high school in Hawaii I know expensive and this is it. When our son was in kindergarten I picked him up from school instead of my husband and the next day the kids Jumped him.they said he was not yellow white he is yellow black and used the N-word. I was shocked my husband looks mixed or latino and my son looks just like him. I sometimes get those attitudes when my husband and I go out to eat at some places such as Briargate area, Woodland Park, Littleton, etc. I am surprised I only lived here previously when my dad was stationed here when I was 9 I am now in my early 30's. I like to find a place that is cultural, family friendly, We like to eat out sometimes as family and others as mommy and daddy time, education is a must with and autistic 7 year old, and jobs. we are looking for a good place to raise a family. I would consider other cities in colorado or any state for that matter any suggestions?

Hi Cristine, If there was any way you were able to visit Tucson for a week or so to get the feel for it, I would highly recomend it. My wife and I like Tucson alot, but that is a matter of opinion. We have lived in many places and Tucson has treated us well, mabey because we have stayed here longer than anywhere else (8 years). I am a chef and my wife is a stylist and we have never had an issue finding jobs, in fact, we would quit a job on a whim. But then, we have no children. Moving is not easy, and I couldent imagine doing it with a family, so I wish you the best of luck. Brenden

Christine, Unfortunately you will find ignorant people almost anywhere you go. We moved to Tucson over 10 years ago to escape the extreme cold of Minnesota. One of the first things we fell in love with, other than the fantastic natural beauty, was the diversity of cultures. You see it reflected in the architecture and the local cuisine. I think your family would feel comfortable here. On the down side, in general the pay is low, but so is the cost of living. Housing got to be pricey a few years ago as it did most places, but has declined the last two years and is still going down. Aside from a higher than average crime rate, my biggest complaint is the traffic. I agree with others who say that there are some of the worst drivers in the country living here. I think it's because there are no freeways and people become so frustrated going anywhere and being stuck in gridlock. The public schools aren't the best, if I had young kids I would go to the Flowing Wells school district or try a private or charter school. You really need to do your homework here. There are some outstanding teachers in Tucson. As anywhere, you need to be actively involved in your child's school for them to get the most out of it. Many people complain about the schools but do little to nothing to help remedy the situation. You should try a visit in the summer to see if you can endure the heat. Summer here can easily last over four months.
