Review of Tucson, Arizona

Climate is the attraction; otherwise, brace for Hi

The mountains and weather are great. Locals have a third-world, anti-intellectual, uptight, inferiority complex that makes moving here from a cosmopolitan area a real challenge. Sophistication about cuisine and local food shopping rates a 2 out of 10. There's close to no interest in recycling, water, or energy conservation (they talk the talk but don't walk the walk) and local government is a joke. Welcome to the 1950's. It's a macho, gun-toting society. But Tucson is the bluest city in the state. Forewarned is forearmed.

I moved here from Albuquerque, because of my lady's job. I thought Albuquerque had beautiful weather, boy I was wrong. Tucson's climate is unreal. Besides the two real hot months in mid summer, the weather is fantastic. Cool nights, warm days. Driving in Tucson needs some getting used to. There are zillions of old people that don't give a damn anymore, so be careful. New Mexico has better food, if you like it spicy. I live on the west side, where some people would advise you not to go to. I never had any problems, people actually seem pretty nice. I love Tucson, its a great city.

Contrary to this reviewer's claims, Tucson is a progressive haven in a largely right-wing Mormon state. The University of Arizona is world renowned for its contributions in astronomy and optics. Its Center for Creative Photography may have been mentioned here or there maybe once or twice ;^) . According to Newsweek, BASIS Charter School may be an O.K. place to send your child to school, having only achieved 1st place in the nation for 2008. As for our refuse, of what doesn't make it into our recycling program, Tucson Electric Power (our local distributor) converts a portion into electricity by tapping the off gassings from our landfills, filtering the methane and burning it at the closest power generation plant. TEP also leads this hemisphere in alternative energy production with their Sunshare solar subsidy program and a huge installation of solar collectors in the desert (Springerville Generating Station Solar System, producing 7,764 MWh in 2006 --the largest output of any single photovoltaic system) Many, if not most, of our buses now run on biodiesel (and are, unfortunately, more efficient per capita as they run so irregularly). We're making a desperate attempt to recharge the water table, pumping Central Arizona Project water into the upper ground layers with --ick-- purified wastewater, which we hope will further purify as it makes its way into the lower water table. We have the Opera and Symphony, but we are still a "large town." You'll have to wait some months before Arizona Presents brings the latest Broadway number to Tucson. As for food, I'm not much for haute cuisine; so, if you want to pay upwards of $50 to eat treif on a plate --who knows?-- you may just have to go to Phoenix.

It amazes me to see people up root themselves to a place they think they want to go and change it. You move to a place for what it is -not to go change it to your liking. Their is positive and negative every where and you move to a place for what it is. If the neg. out way the pos. then why move their?

You got that right as to the quality of the cuisine. 2 out of 10 is about right. But you forgot to mention the customer no-service attitude that most businesses have out here in Tucson. Despite it's short falls Tucson isn't exactly a bad place, all in all.
