As a single person, you will have a difficult time surviving in Manhattan on less than $50,000/year. After 15+ years in the city, I was laid off, then got a job with a city agency (and grateful for it!) for 32K and my rent is now 75% of my income. If you're coming here alone with a pocket full of dreams, make sure your pocket also has at least $5000 in cash to get set up in any semblance of a studio apartment (ie, for $1600/mo - if you can find one - you may need 1st month, 1 month security, 1 month broker fee and utility set up fees).
