DO NOT EVER MOVE HERE !!!!YOU WILL THANK ME !!!
Star Rating - 4/30/2006
I was born and raised in steubenville left when i was 19 and havent been back since except for a family funeral . The cost of living is great 300-500 for a house or apartment but that doesnt matter cause it is nearly impossible to find a job in this place .Averagely 6-8 months unless you get lucky . The locals are not liberal at all not a diverse place theres no asians ,hispanics ,gays or any other minority for that matter except black and theres some racial tension there as well . The steel mills that used to support the area have went under so the only major corporations that are there is walmart and herald star newspaper . The population has decreased from 37,000 to 20,000 in about two or three decades . The crime is out of control for a small town of this size especially in the so called downtown area . Summers are humid but nice if your not dodging bullets from the occasional drive by shootings .There is a mall here but with all about 15 stores the closest thing to nice shopping or dining out is in pittsburgh pa ch is one hour away . There use to be alot here but because of the town relying on the steel mills and not promoting other major corporations theres no more back bone for the town . there is one college franciscan university which most of those guys finish and move somewhere else .The city government is broke along with the school system ,local residents are always moving out .The ohio river along the steubenville /weirton wv area is dirty and not really safe to swim in . Abandoned houses are common in this town and the city is always knocking more down after they sit and rot literally after a decade . The city government is trying to bring in more restoration of historic areas and they have but so far when i went back there last summer the only new things that are there are a couple dollar stores still no big industry to support the city.Thank goodnes I left when i did I now live in Denver ,Colorado which is very clean and safer than the small town of steubenville .

I visited Steubenville w/my parents ( they grew up there and went back for a reunion) and I must say, I thought the Ohio Valley was one of the prettiest places I have visited in the Country (I have been to all 50 states). Jeff’s limited knowledge of diversity will excuse his ignorance. I wouldn’t want him being in law enforcement, apparently he believes only Hispanic’s, Gay’s and Asians are the only diverse groups in America, and more importantly these ethic groups don’t deserve the titles of being Americans. WOW what a looser. Jeff, Do us a favor --- don’t breed. I have read ignorance is inherited. :>) And to all the Serbian’s, Greeks, and Italians who live in Steubenville – Jeff has stated you don’t have a culture worth mentioning – U don’t qualify under his rules of diversity. Good for you my fellow American’s. Embrace and celebrate your ancestors cultural backgrounds sharing that w/others to continue making America strong _ one language one belief system – America 1st – for my next Generation of American Greek/Irish Grandbabies we embrace our cultures but we love our Country “America.” To Jeff & Dennis see if any other country would take you!!! Dennis is simply stupid but much more frighten he is a true bigot – his statements confirm he is a Catholic hater.,his children must of flunked the entrance exam at the Franciscan University – it happens, learning how to speak Latin and Greek isn’t speaking in tongue’s your moron.. Another one we hope won’t be breeding. :>)) To all my Gay brothers and sisters - the Ohio Valley is a wonderful place to live – majority of the people (other than Jeff and Dennis types) will accept the Gay lifestyles, now that is nto to imply they all agree, but they accept the decisions you make on whom you chose to live your life with. you, that is not to say they agree w/our life-style but they accept it is our decision. Take a look, it is Beautiful! Hal - Ur points are right on.. I have also been in Seattle and find the life styles of so many horrible and very very sad. U would love West V - even though so many are liberals they have good hearts - just have been brained washed to believe the unions will take care of them.. its sad but true.

Agreeing with jacob on this, the people have no goals or ambitions whatsoever. My mom moved here about a year ago from a place u would never believe(us.)She says "God has called her here." I think she is crazy after a divorce with my abusive father. When I explained that a lot of other people on the internet agree with me that its a place for druggies and gangs she refused to listen to me. She said "The internet is wrong." I even offered to show her the site and she said, "No, I won't look at it," as if she already knew. GOD WOULD NEVER CALL SOMEONE HERE SO GET OUT ALREADY!

Well Jeffy, I agree that the Steubenville area isn't what it was when I grew up there. The air is alot cleaner though. Too many factories moved toAsia and Mexico. Two of your premises I would like to Adress: Liberalism and Diversity. I live in perhaps the foremost hotbeds of these two forms of mental illness-Seattle, WA. I see diversity everyday in the form of sexual perversion, Mexican and Asian Gangs, and hordes of mentally ill and drug addicts living on our streets. Though the people of the Upper Ohio Valley could use a lot more in the way of job opportunies, they do not need your form of Denver Liberalism. I return to the O.V. every year to visit family and in 5 years my wife and I plan to retire there to enjoy the low cost of living and the "Low Crime". Yes, check the crime stats. Steubenville has a lower crime rate that Seattle and I would bet lower than Denver. Outside the city and in the neighboring towns crime is extremely low. If you don't want to take my word for it, check SperlingViews crime section. Being a 40 minute all freeway drive to Pittsburgh, the area has all you can want.

I have lived in Steubenville for five years and I have to honestly say this is the most depressed area I have ever lived in. The people are friendly only if you are familiar, meaning if you have a different perspective on life you are told to shut up and sit down by the mase majority. I felt as if I had driven into a bubble of closed mindedness. The town and people are lost in the 1940's and I have been told the same stories over and over about how this place was happening back then. Well all that is happening now is crime. Organized crime, drugs, and prostitution. The drugs and prostitution are right out in the open and the people that live here are fully aware of it. Now, Steubenville is not a large city, small in comparison to many places and it is very odd that the police have not stopped this from happening. The criminals are in plain sight. You do the math. The prejudiceness is horrible here. I have lived in the deep south and the people here are right on key with some of the worst I've come accross. Being a professional is looked at by who you know not your skill sets. Their are ample religious groups and a variety of them. Again you are treated like an outsider when you attend. I spoke with a business owner that has been here for ten years and was told when he moved here he went to the chamber of commerance, joined a church and has been an upstanding citizen, he has still in ten years yet to be welcome to the area. Women are treated lowly or stick to their families. Strong independent women are looked down on and as if they should be broken, unless they come from an old family from the area with money. I spoke with an official in the steubenville juvenile detention center (without mentioning names) that assured me it was appropriate for parents to beat their kids when they talk back (he does) and if they had too they would put a child in custody as a ripe green pumpkin and send them off to prison when they were of age to become nice and orange. They love the business! My response is I think there are actually laws protecting animals against that behavior. There is a masive breakdown in this town and it is extremely unhealthy. Every form of power that I have seen demonstrated is of a street mentality. Power asserted through put downs, negativity, and aggregated means. No progressive positive outlook or actions. Now you may think I am being negative I am not, I am telling you like it is. This is a family orianted area which is completely mind boggling. The only good thing for the children is sports in the schools and the parents and adults involved become mini Nazi soldiers where it is all about them competing for attention and the children used as a means to do so, it's embarrasing and detrimental to the growth of these young minds for the adults to relize their examples. The pedifiles are regarded as a common occurance and I was told to just get used to it by an attorney that it is "COMMON" in this area? Does that equate to exceptable? I worked in the hospital for three years on several wings in the hospital I was told "sexual harrasment was common, completely unexceptable but, (without stopping to take a breath) we are all very close and we do not like problems so we try to handle that internally." Nice! I was also informed that the police and the hospital employees are very close along with the attorneys. No hint intended I'm sure. Employeement is very scarce, I was forchinate to have an aunt employeed with the hospital but the neighbor that has moved here from Nebraska who is a great individual and has an impecable resume, skill set and personality has been told on numours interviews that she was nice and they liked her but asked her "she isn't from the area is that right?" They would be intouch with her. Nice. For the people on the blog that are from Steubenville originally I'd like to say I'm really sorry. You may have been born here and lived here all your life and it is all that you know, but that does not make it ok. The ignorance is abundant and whomever is quoting the crime rates you are equating the population is that correct? Per capita? Much crime here goes unreported and you knoe that as well. An area is only as strong as their leaders maybe its time to look outside of the box before this place falls off the map. Can you walk outside without a care look up at the sky and smile at the neighbors wave and confidently say you are proud of your city? The business and homes that are closed or falling apart down town.... take them down or rebuild we need entrepreneurs to come, open businesses and open up jobs. We need proper care for the mentally ill walking on the streets, adolesent support, how many people are not working that could volunteer their time to clean up this town and bring it back to life. Many homes could use coats of paint, is there a high pressure water business or sand blaster in town to wash away some of the mills stains on these beautiful buldings. Is it enough to say I'm from here and my pride keeps this place going without taking any actions at all. Thank God they are fixing the roads! I am so happy to see this. a huge improvement and movement by why stop there? Honestly people do not speak up here, they are intimidated or beaten down from being here I'm not sure maybe it is the mafia mentality. We need to make this a place we can be proud to raise our children.
