Review of Sloan, Iowa

Sloan Iowa ranked #11 best places to live
Star Rating - 10/29/2011
My family lived in Sloan for 4 years. My husband is an ER physician and I am a stay at home mother. We have 3 children. We chose the community because of a beautiful, historic brick home thatwe found on the internet and we planned to live our entire lives in. After several years of my children being bullied, our home being vandalized and our property being vandalized we were advised by an attorney to leave the community. We have several police records that will verify this, in addition to the notes from City Council, the sheriff department and the Woodbury county District Attorneys office. The last year we lived in the home we had 24 hour survelance cameras placed outside our home. I contacted a national organization called "The Bullying Police" while we lived there and I requested they come to our town to hold a meeting as they sometimes do for communities that have issues with bullying. After explaining to them the problems we were having they also suggested that we move.
I contacted the school board, principal,Iowa dept of Education, coaches and athletic director of the school to inform them of the problems we were having and showed them a hospital report from my sons injuries after he was assulted by two senior boys his 7th grade year. One of the boys that assulted him was up for Homecoming King, was captain of the football team and his father was in his final months of getting ready to retire from the Sheriffs department. A week after I submitted this information and requested a meeting, our front yard was full of for sale signs from homes that were for sale in our town. We later found out the wife of one of the school board members and several of the EMT and volunteer fire department were responsible for placing the signs in our yard. This also, can be confirmed with police reports. Once when calling 911 to request for help, I was told the police wouldn't be coming. Later our attorney requested the tape and we found from the 911 supervisor and from the tapes that they weren't sending for help becasue "I was a bitch". These of course were the colleauges of the Sheriffs deputy that assaulted my son and we had pending charges against him. (Again, more information that can be verified)
We intentionally sold our house "by owner" so we could screen buyers and not allow for another family to move in to the community. We sold it to a single woman who we knew would not be at risk to have these types of issues. The Woodbury County District attorney played a big role in covering the issues we were having due to the fact that the young man that assulted my son was the son of a sheriffs deputy. We contiplated suing and had a trial attorney willing to take our case but decided to spend the money moving to another county as soon as we could. Again, this can be confirmed. We moved from Sloan in 2008.

This is not a safe, friendly community by any standards. The school is ranked very low and in addition to the fact that they have late starts or cancel school during hunting season, they allow for riffels to be kept in cars of students during hunting season. Obviously not a smart decision based on the number of recent school shooting. Another issue I addressed with the principal, Super Intendent, and school board. There are other stories like this from this town. Feel free to contact me and I will tell you how to confirm everything I have written.
