Review of Coon Rapids, Iowa

Whiterock Conservancy and Riverside Park
Star Rating - 11/13/2010
Coon Rapids is home to the 4,300 Whiterock Conservancy land trust. Besides owning the Garst Farm visited by Nikita Khrushchev in 1959, Whiterock has the darkest skies, and thus the brightest stars, in the state of Iowa. Whiterock also anchors the Raccoon River Savanna Bird Conservation Area. Bird-watching is improving all the time as more area landowners are restoring their timbered pastures back to native Oak Savannah and prairie. The town lies along the Middle Raccoon River. The lovely Riverside Park located just east of town, as well as Whiterock Conservancy stretching 8 miles down both banks of the river, provide miles of trails (10 miles paved, the rest dirt trails). Canoeing the river is a popular summertime activity.
