the city by the sea

Long Beach is one of two cities located on Long Island, New York. It is on a barrier island on the south shore of Long Island. We enjoy this calm fun location while at the same time we are only one hour from New York.

While Long Beach sounds great in theory; I've lived here 30 years and I've just seen a steady decline. It's EXTREMELY overcrowded, just forget about parking anywhere near your destination; and the real estate is untouchable. VERY overpriced! Think twice.,

A very interesting place to live. Combining the metropolitan culture with a conservative stability of a high income area, the beach brings folks from all walks of life. It's not unusual to find a multi-million dollar mansion side by side with a Section 8 duplex. All races mix here and unlike many suburban villages, people of all races share in home ownership and all income brackets. That's unusual on Long Island and attracted me to raise my kids here. While lower-priced parts of town are littered with rowdy bars, much of the community is very family-oriented which a small town feel. There are many programs for families, and tax money is spend on the tax payer and not the free-loader, which is another plus. The beaches are superb, with great waves and swimming. The nicest time for residents are after the summer season when the crowds leave. The boardwalk and streets are safe to walk day and night. Long Beach has its own police department and paid fire department. While these hike property taxes and rents to obscene levels, it guarantees a better quality of life. You get what you pay for. Politics are generally corrupt, with a Democratic cartel taxing and spending the City into deep debt while enriching family and friends. If you can get past there, and afford $12,000 property taxes and monthly one-bedroom rents of $1950, you can live in one of the nicest spots in the nation.
