Surprising Crime Rate
Star Rating - 6/18/2007
We moved to Vancouver mid-2006 and were surprised at the high property crime. We live in what seems like a great neighborhood but have seen vandalism, arson, theft from cars and house break-ins all very close to us.

I think this is all relative to the area you live in. I have lived in what appears to be a nice neighborhood, but is over run by teenage Russian boys. I am not saying they are all the same, but the ones in that neighborhood were bullies and thieves. They were the type to gather in great numbers to beat down one kid smaller than them and when those of us who were aware of this approached the parents, we received the stereotypical "sorry...no speak English" response. Then there are other neighborhoods where most of the families are more involved with their kids and don't let this kind of thing fly. It is hard to know which neighborhoods are which until you have lived in a couple, or know some who have lived there. This is true of any city though.

It does hurt a little to agree with Tim and Kathryn on neighborhood property crime. This is nearly all from juveniles. The local police know who they are but they just are not committed to solving the problem. My belief is that the Mayor should step in and place some resolve in the police force. In my neighborhood and one of my elder relatives my son and I patrolled the neighborhood ourselves since, like the police, we know who these people are. In both cases once the juveniles and young adults knew that someone was onto them they moved on. We also called the police when we observed people that had no business in the neighborhood simply loitering with an attitude that no one could do anything about it. Sad story I know..I wish it was different..I hope when the juveniles grow up and move out on their own they will be out of my neighborhood and it will be the great place it is having tax advantages due to its no sales tax-no income tax opportunity because of its geographic location. Vancouver also has a temperate climate and great natural beauty.

You only left out one thing, that everyone here wants a piece of your money. When we moved here in '98 the so called welcome wagon called, not came, and all they wanted to know was what model of cars we drove, and how much we made in income so they could take advantage of us. Everything else in your letter, I hear ya! We are looking to get out of here as soon as possible when my husband can get a job somewhere else...
