Review of Newton, New Hampshire

Newton is a small, nice, quiet, bedroom community that is on the rural side. The majority of people keep to themselves, but there is a small number of people whom are active in local affairs. House prices average about $300,000. Recently, you get more property for your buck than in most of the surrounding towns. While there is no income tax in NH, they make up the difference in property taxes, so property taxes are high! Expect to payabout $7,500 annualy for a $3000,000 home. It is a great place if you commute, because I-95, I-495 and NH 125 are all about 10 minutes drive. All of the houses have there own well and septic systems, the townsfolk have resisted efforts to have such systems installed. Some complain that thier available water and pressure is frequently low. In recent years, there have been several prolonged power outages, the power frequently goes out during heavy storms. Many people now have generators in case of long winter power outages. You have to bring your own garbage and recycling to the transfer station. All four seasons are experienced, and we frequently see rabbits, deer and foxes in the woods around the houses. It is quiet and dark at night. Crime is relatively low, occasionally there are episodes of burglary. Fire department is almost all volunteer, so there might be a delay in case of a fire. I like this place, but the real estate and taxes make the cost of living high!
