Review of Graham, Washington

Too Many People
Star Rating - 5/7/2008
I live in the Pierce County area in Washington state. It's the county that's underneath King County (where Seattle is). It's true that the Seattle and Puget Sound area is quite beautiful, with the mountains and the water, but more and more people continue to move here. You can see the results of that in the urban sprawl and the worsening traffic. One cannot even enjoy the mountains and the water without contending with wall-to-wall people. Housing developments are going in wherever they can squeeze them into and it's impossible to get around anymore. I live in a rural area of Graham, which used to be considered "in the sticks." Not anymore - especially with all the housing that is getting packed in everywhere. More housing = more traffic = tougher to get anywhere in an efficient manner = lower quality of life. I feel quite often like a rat in a maze. The county is not keeping up with roads that need to service our area. I work in downtown Seattle and my commute everyday is 4 hours (round trip). The high housing prices in Seattle make it impossible to find an affordable place to live closer to where I work. I (like lots of others) are forced to find more affordable housing in Pierce County and endure the commute. As soon as I reasonably can, I'm moving away from here.

I grew up in Graham on my family property. Developers came in and bought hundreds and hundreds of acres all around us, leveled all the forest and sold to rich people. One has a helicopter pad and flies around in the summer. They dug ditches around the north part of our property that are literally 6 feet deep to keep the water out of their land--which has drained our wet land and started killing all the trees we have. It's really sad. Recently someone sold about 50 acres and developers leveled the trees there too. It used to be so pretty, now it's just expensive houses surrounding us on 3 sides. Someone even built one so close to my parents that its all you see when you look south now. Really sad. It used to be a beautiful area and like the original poster stated, it's too crowded. Meridian--the main and only logical way to the freeway--is so horrible it takes me 20 minutes to drive 2 miles. I work Seattle and Everett area and I prefer driving Seattle. The companies that are building up in the area are ruining the feel of the area as well. A couple years ago we voted down a massive dump in the swamp and they basically said, too bad so sad. Now there is a giant mountain of garbage towering above the trees in swamp land. The original poster is not exaggerating, I have lived here for 30 years and my dad for 60. I remember when it used to be a two lane road from South Hill to Graham, now it's a five lane highway with cops patrolling it frequently. And the worst part is, you know people are from here by how they drive. Doing 10mph on the freeway for 2 hours gets old really fast.
