Review of Grants Pass, Oregon

Taking one for the family

I moved here bacause my wife wanted to be closer to my retired mother. Were it not for that GP would be in the rear view mirror.

Grant Pass may be great if you are retired because there is an abundance of healthcare and retirement homes here. But for anyone who is educated (e.g. BS or higher) it is an intellectual wasteland (<20% with college degrees). People here are stuck in the 1950s because many of the residents (average age 58) still remember the 50's.

Young people with any hope of a future leave to more diverse economic areas. The primary economic drivers are services (e.g. fast food), construction, healthcare and the government. Not a very strong economic base. Most of the young who live here leave for better opportunities.

The website Areavibes, gives Grants Pass a D in every category except Amenities, which is a bit of a misnomer as they include dentists, physicians and the basic stores downtown. There are activities on the river, but I am not a fan of jetboats, so scratch that!

Bottom line is if you are a retiree and your needs are limited and you don't need serious cultural stimulation it can be fine. (Don't let the climate propaganda fool you, it gets stinking hot in the Summer!) But,I think there is a reason they use the caveman as their mascot: The town is inhabited by Neanderthals.

The town is more integrated than it was when it was the local headquarters for the KKK, but it is still essentially a white town with >90% white population. To be clear there is some diversity e.g. LGBT and racial, but it is clearly in the minority.
