I have lived in Elkhart County for over 11 years now. The following are just facts of this area since 2004 and my experience. All facts can be verified by several legitimate websites.
Fact...Indiana is the number one state with the most meth labs and arrests in the country. Fact...Elkhart County is ground zero for the state of Indiana and has the most meth labs and arrests in the state.
Fact Elkhart County Indiana is the home to the RV Capital of the World and the manufacturing of RV homes. Fact Elkhart County Indiana is home to one of the lowest wage and median household incomes in the United States.
Fact Elkhart County and for what it's worth is 90% Republican voters and holds a far right extreme (tea party) conservative ideology and view. Fact Elkhart County has one of the lowest costs of living in the Country (based on the fact of lowest wages and education).
Fact less than 8% of all high school graduates go on to college from Elkhart County ...that includes Goshen & Middlebury schools and all other schools in the county. Fact many teachers in the educational system are not required to have a elementary or secondary education major/college degree for teaching. You can major in ceramics and get a state license to teach math and science.
Fact...Elkhart County has the highest population of Hispanics in the state of Indiana and at over 40% ( hence the low ball wages/income) Fact...Elkhart Indiana's number one industry is the RV industry there is nothing else they rely on...it is cyclical and ebbs and flows via the economy...you work for three or four years then you are laid off for two years.
Fact...the talented work force of Elkhart County that holds a higher education and higher paying jobs Manager/Supervisor are from other states or nearby St. Joe County.
Fact Elkhart County is home to one of the largest Atheist Communities in the Country.
Fact Elkhart County Schools to include Goshen and Middlebury have one of the highest student/teacher ratio's in the country.
I could go on and on right now...but I think you get the picture. If you and your family are considering a move to this area and or Michiana I highly suggest you live in and or around St. Joe County...and for many reasons.
We've got five years left until our son heads to college...then we are out of here.
