Review of Orangeburg, South Carolina

Transplant from up north
Star Rating - 5/6/2020
I moved to Orangeburg 7 months ago from up north and have mostly learned/adapted to enjoy it. I’ll admit I was worried about the crime statistics, but there are very nice parts of town, just like anywhere else. Locals I’ve interacted with are all very nice, but they will warn you about going out after dark and avoiding trouble. There are major cultural differences at times. I feel like it’s mostly an population here. Golfing is big. Weather is totally amazing all winter and spring compared to living in Pennsylvania. Beautiful, long blooming season. The summers are very hot, but that’s why I have a pool! 3 star rating is also due to the town only having a few nice restaurants, no major event centers, no bowling or movie theater, nothing very classy, service is typically slow and attitudes may be shamelessly rude (in some cases- maybe 50%). Have a job lined up because industry is lacking, though there are some factory type companies around. Great barbecue here (mustard based). Some new things are being built. It’s conveniently located to Columbia and Charleston, but the highways are very dangerous compared to anywhere else I’ve lived. Your money will go farther in terms of housing, especially. Lots of outdoor recreational opportunities. Schools aren’t the best, from what I’ve been told, but there are private school options as well.

This will be my family’s home for at least the next 3-5 years, and I think we’re going to enjoy it more and more. We’d love for more nice people to come and more business need to open up! Oh, and coronavirus hasn’t been too bad here due to smaller population.

Amazingly accurate. Surprised by the 3 stars a bit, but it’s changed a bit for the worst since your review. The attitudes, the entitlement (almost like you’re SCARED not to tip for terrible service), some restaurants (the few here) just go ahead and add the 15% gratuity to your bill. This place is NO place I’d bring my kids, my parents, but here I am living in it because no one wants to buy our house you have to get to driving on trashy roads with blunt wrappers and OE bottles everywhere.
