Review of Roanoke, Virginia

I'd like to start out with the positive, what little there is. The city and surrounding environs are beautiful. The are lovely hills and mountains in the area. Hiking, biking, and other outdoorsy activities are common. If you like being outdoors and don't mind humidity, these are highlights for you. On the other hand, there are very distressing problems here that never seem to be solved.
First there's the weak job market. The area has an abundance of 7 and 8 dollar an hour jobs. Many offer only part time work, and little job security. If you're going to work a higher paying job, then you'll probably work for Carillion Medical. That company usually brings in professionals from other areas though, and even then with significant pay cuts from what they would earn elsewhere. Larger employers, and those paying higher wages have pulled up and left, this includes Norfolk Southern which has been with the town for almost a century. The company pulled out of the town very suddenly, leaving 500 people without jobs.
Second, there is a serious and growing problem with drugs in the area. Although, it would seem odd that such a small area would have problems with drugs, it's happening here. Meth, heroin, bath salts, and prescription medications are heavily abused in this area. My doctor is preparing to leave the area due to the drug problems occurring here.
Third, there is a growing problem of vacant commercial real estate in this area. There are two primary shopping malls, Valley View and Tanglewood. The latter is in its death throws. Most of the shops have closed, and the mall is left largely vacant, a dead mall. Valley View had fared a little better, however, many of the stores in the mall complex are closed or closing leaving dark, ugly, holes where store fronts used to be.
Last (there's so much more, but I'll cut it short), there's the people. This is the deep south, so one experiences plenty of open racism. Everyone carries a gun. There is poor dental hygiene in the area, typical of poor southern towns, so many people are missing some or all of their teeth. Others have teeth so blacked and rotten you'd swear they are on meth. There is an undercurrent of ignorance and ineptitude here, trash is dumped out of speeding cars. If there is litter on grass, people will simply mow right through it spreading filth everywhere.
The area is cheap to live in, and with good reason. There is little entertainment, or economic opportunity here. The homes are cheap because they generally don't have garages, and your neighbors are pigs. The area is prone to flooding. Even mild rainstorms can knockout power for weeks in some areas. I've heard more that one person describe Roanoke and being 10 years behind the rest of the country. Not in a positive way, and it shows.
I have two degrees and have gotten stuck in this quagmire due to difficulty finding work. I have an acquaintance with three degrees, but cannot find anything outside of food service. All in all, the area is a beautiful place to visit, but not to live unless you're a retiree. I'm looking for a better city, probably Richmond or Virginia Beach, I hope to see you there.

In regards to Linda, yes shopping malls are closing all over the US. However, the message is an opinion about Roanoke, and the surrounding areas. In this area, the malls are dying and dead. Does that mean Roanoke is the only area with dead malls? No. It means that Roanoke has dead and dying mall and for many people that in undesirable. Secondly, if the area is geographically the deep south is less important than is the people act like the deep south. If one considers a map of the United States, West Virginia isn't any more south than Virginia, but if you go there you will see a much lower class of "deep southern" people. A similarly low class can be found in Roanoke. You commented that you have never witnessed any racism, however you fail to indicate your race. As a non-white in the area, I have had people ask whether my parents are married, during job interviews. I have recently sold a rather nice vehicle through Craigslist, and had the buyer ask if the vehicle was even mine. I have been called a 'colored boy' by a customer while doing my job. If you've never seen any racism here, you're just not looking for it. Are drugs worse here than everywhere else? No. Are drug problems worse here than in Salem? Yes. I've lived in Salem, for five years and have never heard of drug related fights, or other violence here. You claim that drugs are a problem downtown, is the green way downtown? Some areas are seeing gentrification, just like anywhere else in the United States, however many areas are dilapidated and in poor condition. South East comes to mind. Bad dental hygiene, is a particular problem in this area, is it the worst in the world? Probably not. Is the the Worse in the US? Also probably not. Is it fairly bad, and definitely worse than areas with better educated people? Yes. I find it interesting that you agree that littering is a problem, but claim that you've never had pigs for neighbors. You likely live in a fairly wealthy part of town.

Whoa, there. 1. For starters, malls are closing everywhere; this is not unique to Roanoke. 2. The state of Virginia (southwest VA included) is not the deep south; it's the upper south and considered part of the mid-Atlantic region. 3. I have lived here for twenty years and never witnessed the racism you describe. 4. If drug problems are worse here than anywhere else, I have yet to hear of it. Drugs are probably more of a problem in parts of the downtown area than in the area surrounding Roanoke (the county), but that is common everywhere. 5. I live within the city environs and have never had "pigs" for neighbors. I walk all over the city's neighborhoods, and homes are well kept up; beautiful renovations are taking place in classical old homes near the downtown area. 6. Bad dental hygiene? I can tell you I've seen way worse elsewhere; have not noticed it being awful here. People here generally have nice smiles and the teeth to go with it. And speaking of walking, Roanoke has an extensive and beautiful greenway system which runs alongside the river and elsewhere - and is constantly expanding. Sadly, though, some of your points are valid....notably the littering and the lack of employment opportunities.
