as a child i grew up on the west side.auburn was a lovely place to grow up.my father worked at a local company called ALCO,a division of white motors.sadly many buisnesses that made auburn what it was(a city of diverse idustry, have all but long gone.the citys neighborhoods were diverse ethnic and cultural conclaves, mom and pop groceries dotted many a steet corner providing ethnic foods groceries and treats.emerson park was always the perfect place to go swimmming, picnic, play and ride the merry go round, watch a ball game or enjoy fireworks displays.down town auburn offered a variety of shopping and was easy to get to by bus.a family bargan center located on cotage st,served the west end.Auburn memorial hospital was in its hay day,it is where i first trained to be a nurse and held my first job.many buisnesses thrived and grew because of the immmigrant population,i remember bowling alleys and soda shops, now when i travel back i see gas stations, pizza parlors and pharmacies.a far cry from what she once was, times change and so do people. so many families were involved in the day to day life blood of auburn.such a history.as much as i miss the old auburn there is still charm to her untarnished by the years.the owasco fire dept still famous for its fourth of july parade and signature chicken bbq, a summer institution, the WILLIAM H SEWARD HOUSE,my most favorite field trip as a child, cayuga county community college, where i also attended.so many more things abound, just look to the chamber of commerce for information.
