Beware of the beach
Star Rating - 9/21/2020
We are going on our 3rd year in OS. We love the small town feel, the low stress and feeling of safety. This is all for the winter months mind you. In the summer, it is a wild, free for all of Seattle vacationers and the town swells to the point where you don't want to leave your house. The town is under served for essential services like groceries and gas. It's almost impossible to find contractors to work on your home and property crime is on the rise. The school district is one of the worst I have ever experienced and there are currently more than 100 homeless children in the district and most of the teachers are less than stellar, which makes it almost impossible for children to learn in the classroom. I would suggest renting for a year before making the leap to buy a home here. It is a completely different world at the beach. Some for the good and some for the bad!

We bought a fixer in 2017 as a 2nd home and finished the remodeling in 2020. Sold our other house, retired and moved here in Feb. 2021. Winter wind and rain are brutal here and can go on for weeks at a time, but there's these nice sunny spots that shine thru for several hours here and there. That's when we go outside and recharge our batteries. Spring, and Fall are still rainy and cool with many more of them Sunny breaks. Summer I spend a lot of my spare time riding down the beach either sitting in a fold up chair, and running around town on my Scooter. Neighbors have been awesome, and some turned into friends. We mainly shop in Aberdeen and Olympia sometimes and only pick up extras at the local grocery store because the prices are double there. Ace hardware is totally awesome they always have everything I need, the prices are maybe slightly higher then the big town stores. But for the convenience of getting what I need 5 minutes from my house it's well worth it. Also the employees are very knowledgeable on almost everything I need to do, One last thing is, we have an alarm system, cameras with phone notifications on our home so we feel comfortably safe when we are gone in our RV. Knock on wood we haven't had any problems so far.
