Review of Crawfordsville, Indiana

What you'd expect from a tiny town in Indiana
Star Rating - 1/27/2018
If you like chain stores and chain smoking, you will love it here. Almost everyone smokes, and most people reek of nicotine. They also love going to church and talking about church constantly, so if you're not Christian, you are not going to feel welcome. The constant Christianing is too much for me (and I am from the Deep South). I heard from a friend that a lesbian professor at Purdue was basically driven out of Crawfordsville for being gay, so there's that. There's also soft racism here, the kind you'd expect from people who have maybe never seen a black person in real life. Although I did hear an old woman use the n-word in public last night, so maybe it's not so soft?

It's a small town and its glory days are decidedly in the past, so most residents tend to focus on history (and church and smoking). It's hard to blame them when the hottest topic of current Crawfordsville is "I heard we might get a Starbucks!" But if you're not from here, you probably won't care that some random house burned down in 1880 and the lot's been vacant even since. Pretty much the only reminders that you're living in current times are the wide assortment of fast food places & the trains that run through town at all hours of the night.

In terms of positives, crime is minimal and Lafayette & Indianapolis are short drives away (so why not choose to live there instead, where you will be happier). I wouldn't recommend Crawfordsville to anyone who's not already sold on living in a small and church-centric town.
