Review of Hilton Head Island-Bluffton, South Carolina

Bluffton is where I want to retire
Star Rating - 7/13/2020
I'm retired and my husband is about to and we're looking for a second home in a more temperate climate (at least, in the winter) than we have now (north of Boston). We're familiar with Hilton Head Island and like it but want more land and less people. We've stayed at Palmetto Bluffs (a large, expensive "community" in Bluffton) and absolutely, ABSOLUTELY love it. The houses for sale (very few) all exceed $1 million but there are lots for sale so we'd likely build. Last time we were there, we met with the real estate company in Palmetto Bluffs and took a tour, got all our questions answered and concerns mitigated. It has the golf, fishing, sporting "guns" (skeet, etc) that my husband loves but access to the arts, music, etc that I love. It doesn't have the "feel" of a gated community. It's like a small town with the city of Savannah (GA) close by-but not too close. I'm writing this from a retirement perspective so school quality and other concerns that people with kids may have are not relevant to us. And it may just be our fate since I took a quiz on here about "best place for me" and I answered all questions honestly and didn't try to "force" the results to be anyplace specific but I got as #1-Hilton Head-BLUFFTON-Beaufort, SC metro as #1.

Linda, I relocated to the area from the DC metro almost 6 years now and I haven't looked back since. I absolutely love the area and the "local" feel. Palmetto Bluff is absolutely stunning and definitely a unique community - the only hesitation I've received from clients in the past about Palmettos Bluff is the distance to basic shopping such as grocery, however they are building a shopping center about 1-2 from the PB gate which I believe is going to be anchored by Publix Supermarket. Some other communities that come to mind if you don't want a "gated" feel: 1) Oldfield (about 10-15 Miles North of PB on HWY 170) - beautiful equestrian community with a River Club and sporting. 2)Rose Hill Plantation - Specifically the Equestrian Estate Side Centrally located in Bluffton, the community is divided by Route 278 - Equestrian Side (North) & Golf Side (South) The golf side will have the “Gated” community feel; however, the Equestrian side is quite the opposite. Most lots are at least an acre with many 2+ acres in size which gives the community a much more secluded feel. There are a few communities I would caution you away from – but legally I wouldn’t want to get myself in trouble by listing anything negative in a public forum. Anyway, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your visit, when you retire here you will absolutely love it. Everyone here is a transplant so its really easy to get acclimated and meet people. I don’t want to ramble too much, I'm in Real Estate here in Bluffton and Hilton Head, so by all means reach out if you'd like more information on anything or if there is anything I can help with.
