I was born in Decatur, in 1952, and I lived there for 25 years. I am now living in Waikiki Beach (Honolulu, Hawaii), and I could never go back to Decatur, to live. The biggest problem that I have, is the fact that there is still a lot of racial segregation, and racial bias, compared to here in Honolulu, Hawaii. I am so grateful, that I was able to get away from the racist attitudes that I was raised with, there in Decatur- both within the community, and within my own family, and realize that the world does not have to be that way- that we can truly cherish and value one another, irrespective of race or ethnic background. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to acquire that viewpoint, until I moved away from the Midwestern U.S., in 1987. It was then, in Washington, D.C., that I developed a deep appreciation for the cultural diversity that exists within the U.S., and that awareness has grown, as I have lived in Tucson, AZ, and Los Angeles, CA, and now in Honolulu, HI.
