Review of Geneseo, Illinois

People here are quite rude

Having lived in larger cities all my life, I really wanted to experience a small-town feel and quaint surroundings of a small community. Although I'd heard that Geneseo "natives" won't accept you if even your ancestors aren't from there, my new husband and I bought a home there anyway. The home was lovely- an old Victorian built in 1856. In fact, the town itself is very lovely. We'd walk downtown to the movie theater, enjoy the Christmastime Victorian walk, etc. The schools are top notch also. But, because we didn't have children, we were literally "outcasts". No one spoke to us-even our neighbors. Once, we drove to Chicago to purchase a Chevy Avalanche. When it needed warranty work on the power windows, the local Chevy dealer wouldn't even let us make an appointment. He told us that since we bought it in Chicago, we could go back there for repairs too. After living there for several years, I knew what it must feel like to be treated like a minority. Everyone looks and stares and it's really weird. I'd never live there again. Most everyone is 65 and older, white, extremely conservative, etc. That is all fine, but not for my liking. I enjoy culture and neighborly folks. I also lived in Bettendorf for 10 years. Also, awesome schools. I'd live there again. Great town. Forget Geneseo.
