I've lived in Wheeling IL for 13 years. It's a culturally diverse community, mostly blue-collar middle-class but with something for everyone. Housing options include apartments, single family homes, some townhomes and many condominium complexes. Single family homes range from mid-$200K to mid-$300K. Townhomes and condos from approx $150K.
The village has a very ambitious 10-year plan for community expansion, with an eye toward following in the footsteps of Palatine and Arlington Heights by bringing in a sort of metro or downtown area, expanding main roads into boulevards and drawing in more retail. Wheeling has some of the best restaurant choices outside the city of Chicago, and with the addition of the Westin Hotel last year, the village will become an attraction for meetings and conventions. Because of this, I believe many homes in Wheeling will increase in value. The unique position of being an affordable "near North Shore" community makes Wheeling a great place to live.
