Review of Durango, Colorado

Durango Great
Star Rating - 12/30/2006
I lived in Durango for eleven years and find the other posted comments absurd. First it is very safe and DOES NOT have the highest crime rate in Colorado (look it up). I have never heard of anyone being robbed in the entire time I lived there. We never once locked our doors and always left our keys in the ignition without a problem. Secondly, It is one of the friendliest places I have ever been. While home prices are somewhat above the national average, rents are very reasonable and good jobs are not so hard to come by. We were very sorry to leave but can't wait to return. With so much to do and see it should be on everyones list of relocation places. Property taxes are very low and services are excellent. There is decent public transit, a fantastic community rec center and outstanding family center. It is a small town with city sized amenities due to its popularity as a tourist destination. Good sking, river sports, hiking and unbelievable weather make it a true mountain gem.

Dude, Durango does have a high crime rate. And yes, I did look it up -- on the FBI's official webpage! Durango has the second-highest violent crime rate among Colorado cities with 5,000 or more population, with 810 violent crimes per 100,000 residents (where 450 is the national average and 700 is considered high), and rates of aggravated assault, forcible rape, and even murder are especially high. Although it isn't common, people DO get robbed in Durango (there were 4 robberies in 2006). Just because you didn't lock your doors at night doesn't mean that it's safe -- the decision to lock doors or not depends largely on a human's judgment, and humans (except for the police, of course) don't see all of the crime happening in Durango, so they can feel safe even when it's not safe at all. Bottom line: Durango's high crime and extremely high living and housing costs make it a bad place to live and raise a family.

Durango is only a nice place if you have money...people treat you like garbage if your not spending money there-I know, because I have been both poor, & wealthy there-alot of haughty attitudes there, & the town is bulding up more, since Walmart came in..Durango lost it's charm, when it opted for catering to the rich.i will never return, because of the treatment I unfairly received there in 2004.Beautiful place-ugly people.
