Review of Escondido, California

Perfect weather, horrible schools.
Star Rating - 9/26/2020
Escondido wins because of the weather, but has a lot of drawbacks. The schools are HORRIBLE. Like really bad. I've moved around a lot and the schools are the worst I've ever seen. There are a lot of beautiful homes and the proximity to San Diego is close. The homeless population is extremely high. While I wish we could do something to help house them, the government has not and so they build camps all around our community. My son took a walk and saw needles and other paraphernalia that spanned about a square mile with tents. The city does nothing to clear the area. We've been robbed by residents of this camp (we have it on the camera and have seen the same people go into the camp and I even called the police department saying "I'm staring at our robbers" and they didn't come. There's theft everywhere but when you have your robber on camera and also see them walking down the street and can't get the cops to come I would say Escondido has some work to do. I think it's easy to rate any city in Southern California 5 stars because it's all beautiful and weather is perfect, but when you really get into the cracks and crevices there's more going on.

I have lived in Escondido my whole life. Born at Palomar Hospital, 1956. I have seen so much change and not for the good but I have never been on a street or walking trail where I have seen needles nor have I ever been robbed. There are some bad parts of the city, but it's up to you to get out. Our police dept leaves a lot to be desired, yes but we still have a nice little town. I certainly have seen the homeless population increase especially in the last 2 years. It seemed so sudden that I told my husband, I think someone bused them out here from San Diego and LA.

I've lived in Escondido for 20 years and taught in the public schools here for over 30 before I retired. The schools are far from horrible, they suffer from mismanagement but the teachers are great. Homelessness is a nationwide issue. However, the weather isn't perfect. Summer lasts half the year, from June through November, and temps often go over 95 degrees. Winters are mild but dry. Water is scarce. Downtown Escondido is charming and very friendly like Main Street USA.
