Will a 34 year old black couple fit in???

I've lived in California my entire life. I'm used to the diversity, and I'm not familiar with the east coast culture or racial tolerance of the region. I'm a 34 year old black man engaged to a 33 year old fair-skinned black woman.
My job has offered me a position in North Kingstown, RI, and I'm looking for an apartment that's within 10 miles of North Kingstown. I found the Wakefield area, but friends have told me that things are much different for blacks in the entire Rhode Island area.
So, will we be welcomed in the neighborhood, or looked at as to say "what the hell are you doing here"?
