Review of Austin, Texas

Not Moving to Austin - Just Not For Me
Star Rating - 6/17/2012
I recently returned from a visit to Austin, TX. It's rated as the fastest growing city in the U.S. right now -- the best job growth in the country right now as the economy sputters on (concentrated in the tech sector.) I'm looking for another city and after reading all the hype, I booked a flight and hotel room. On the plus side, I did get the impression that it's less pretentious than Washington, DC where I currently live. DC is a political materialistic city and the egos are huge. Austin is a very laid-back kind of city; everyone dresses casual. Most people don't wear suits in downtown Austin. Some people were friendly and some people were not. The people at the UT campus were particularly friendly; but I'm not a student, and not planning to attend UT. The city was very empty and slow, and really not much was going on. I learned that most people head to the Lake. I didn't want to spend the money on a car rental for the few days that I was there. Also, the heat was really bad. It really shocked me. The weather is definitely better in DC.

I really got the impression that it's still a college town, even though the big tech companies have set up offices in and near Austin. It also seems like a city for young male tech workers. There were a lot of bar/restaurants in downtown Austin and there were a lot of young guys hanging out there. I'm a single woman in my 40s (raised in NY), and I've never liked the bar scene. I headed to the museums at the UT campus, which offered interesting exhibits, and toured the state capitol, which was impressive. I talked to a few people, but couldn't find out much about all the hiring that's going on for the tech companies. The heat, lack of activities, and slowness -- had me thinking Austin is not for me. So, can anyone recommend another city that isn't so hot in the summer, has more activities going on, is more cosmopolitan, and has job growth during this miserable recession? Or am I just dreaming that I can find such a place at this point in time in the U.S.?

Jay, Thanks for replying to review of Austin and recommending Boise, Idaho. It sounds like it has great weather as compared to Texas and Arizona. I had never considered Boise because it's a smaller city and I haven't seen it mentioned in reviews of cities in magazines. I'll look into it.

Jay, Thanks for referring me to Colorado Springs, also. I'll look into this city also. I do know that Colorado is very green and I'd really love to move to a city that offers opportunities to hike and enjoy the great outdoors. I just wonder about the job market. But I'll check the major employers for Colorado Springs as I'm researching the city. Good luck with your move! I know from experience, moving is a challenge.

Yeah check out Boise in Idaho because I went there recently for a vacation and I love that town Boise because the weather was great and not hot and humid at all. The people in Boise were very nice. Sometimes Boise do get a little hot in July and August but its nothing like in Texas or Arizona. There is no humidity in the air in Idaho so that what makes it more comfortable during the summer. There is mountains with forests nearby with lots of rivers and lakes and Boise is so close to Oregon and Washington where is beautiful there too. Check out Boise because its a really nice city. South of Boise is a lot of farm land mostly in southern Idaho so avoid that area if you don't like farm land. North of Boise is a great area to visit and the city is great to visit too. I am moving there out of Austin Tx because tired of heat and bad traffic and can't go outside to do stuff like bike riding and in Boise I can go out and do fun stuff outdoor. I am looking forward moving out of Austin very soon.

You might want to check out Colorado Springs too and compare it to Boise Id and see which one you like the best too. I was planning to move to Boise but decided to move to Colorado Springs very soon because Colorado Springs is a very nice town just like Boise and there a lot to do in Colorado Springs because there is huge mountains with forest west of the city and a lot to do in town too. Colorado is very beautiful and its much cooler than Texas. Boise is nice too but its just too far away from my families in Texas. But yeah you might want to check out Colorado Springs but if you do stay away from south and southeast Colorado Springs the west area and northeast is the best area to visit and live. Colorado Springs is so much like Boise in many ways so check it out.
