Review of Owensboro, Kentucky

An "outsiders" perspective
Star Rating - 8/1/2008
This is a scenic area with low crime rates, low cost of living, very clean, very family oriented and a good variety of family activities available here or in close proximity. That said, you do not want to move here unless you have several close friends and family, who are life long residents in good standing. We moved here almost 9 years ago and still have no real new friends. I have met several people who moved to this area within the last 20 years and they also have few, if any, new friends. People are friendly enough, but only on the surface. They just don't accept outsiders here and that also included our teenage daughters, who elected to leave the area ASAP. Many schools here are highly rated (don't know by what standards or by who) and the community is quite proud and boastful in that respect. We found the curriculum to be very "behind" and teaching methods quite slanted toward obtaining/retaining those ratings. Good jobs are not plentiful here and it takes forever to get through the hiring process. The wages are dismal and employees are treated like third rate citizens, including blatant violations of labor laws which people seem to accept due to ignorance or apathy. Although we love the scenery, our very affordable and lovely home, and enjoy many activities available here and in the surrounding area we are currently preparing to sell our home and leave the area. I cannot stand another 9 years without any real friends, an active social life, or a job which I enjoyed going to and where I am treated as a valuable member of a team, things I had always enjoyed in the numerous locations across the USA I lived in prior to moving here.

I feel your pain. Moved here last summer. Husband is originally from here. We moved here because we were hit so hard with fall of economy-husband and I both artists and husband was installing kitchens right before we decided to move. We settled outside of city in Maceo, and everyone is friendly, but kind of lonely, and I am not a shy person. Miss Nashville area friends. What hit me about your comment is the job stuff. I feel so doomed, now...because that is exactly how I feel at my job. Blah!
