Review of Newark, Ohio

As recent newcomers, we love Newark, OH
Star Rating - 11/15/2016
We retired to Newark, coming from the ‘burbs of the Chicago area. People we meet are surprised to hear that someone would choose Newark to retire to, but as newcomers we see a lot of positives. We left the congestion, crime, traffic, and expense, and are so happy we’ve landed here.

It is refreshing to find so many people who are resourceful, friendly, and genuine.

The area is beautiful rolling hills, and one can be living out in the country, yet have access to shopping close by within 6 minutes. Real estate prices are relatively low compared to many other areas and buyers can get a lot of house for far less. Taxes are reasonable; there is no tax on food in Ohio, and our property taxes are only 32% of what we paid in Illinois. Cost of living in general is about 14% less than the US average.

The “downtown” area of Newark has many beautiful old buildings, centered by a county courthouse and square which is being rehabbed. There seems to be supportive efforts to revitalize the area, which includes the gorgeous old historic Midland Theater, and a brand new farmer’s market. New restaurants and a new venue with a bar and acts have sprung up.

Although many areas seem to have very little crime, the older areas closer to the city core may have more crime.

Public transit is non-existent, but there is a county-wide transit bus for the elderly or disabled.

We’re eating better than ever with access to local produce, apple and fruit orchards, free range eggs, and fantastic Amish milk, butter, cheeses, bacon, bulk foods and baked goods.

Newark seems to us to be a small historic city with so much potential with the beautiful old buildings and homes in the historic district. Some of the old abandoned factories are calling out to be transformed into live/work lofts or small business incubators. With only a 33 minute commute to downtown Columbus, as many people we know make, one can live cheaply, yet be in the city quickly if desired.

It’s not fancy, but it is good, sane living.
