Review of Scottsville, New York

Peaceful place to raise a family
Star Rating - 4/4/2013
Just 10 miles south of Rochester, Scottsville offers something between a suburban and small-town lifestyle. To the south lies farmland and forest, including a large woodland park.

Overall, people are friendly and well-meaning. The sense of community isn't overwhelming - because of the suburban feel, you can sort of choose whether or not to have a relationship with neighbors.

The area has a good balance in terms of climate: neither winters nor summers are extremely harsh. January-March can be a little bleak, but spring is beautiful.

The elementary school and middle/high school are both good - they are small, so curricula aren't extensive, but the staff are good and there are a variety of extracurriculars that contribute to a sense of community.

There is very little in town in terms of restaurants, shops, or culture - one cafe, a dollar store, a Chinese place, a diner, pizza joints, a public library, three churches. It's a boring place to grow up as a teenager and there's some amount of teen mischief here.

It's within easy commuting distance of Rochester which has a great array of shops, restaurants, museums, etc. There's not much in the way of renting - home ownership is typical. You almost definitely need a car to live here - only 1 early bus per day into the city.

Right now as a young person I'd rather live some place with more going on- which I think is the main factor contributing to the current population exodus- but it would be a good place to raise a family.
