Review of Wartburg, Tennessee

Outdoor enthusiast dream
Star Rating - 4/3/2022
Wartburg is a small picturesque town surrounded by mountains. If you prefer a more fast paced urban lifestyle Wartburg would not be the right fit. However, if the traffic, pollution and noise of city life has lost its appeal, it may be worth checking out. Frozen Head State Park and Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area have much to offer the outdoor enthusiast. The hiking trails are some of the best you will find anywhere, with options ranging from easy to very difficult. The area is home to one of the most challenging ultramarathons on the planet, the Barkley. With 54,200 feet (16,500 m) of accumulated vertical climb, the 100-mile run/ race is so challenging that 55% have ended with no finishers. Outdoor activities, including camping, fishing, hunting, white water kayaking, swimming, rappelling and many more are practically in your backyard. Great entertainment, including live concerts can be found at the former Brushy Mountain State Prison. Tennessee’s oldest prison is now a great place to spend some time. The former maximum security prison, built from stone quarried on the property by inmate labor, was reborn in 2018 as Brushy Mountain Distillery. The Distillery offers first-rate entertainment options, including tours, concerts, car shows private events and more.
Wartburg and the surrounding area has much to offer the outdoor enthusiast. However the area has its share of faults and problems as well. Close to 30% of the population live below the poverty line. Another negative that has improved some but only slightly in the last few years is the lack of Ethnic diversity

Also of note parts of the area have very dark skies for stargazing! This is a very very rare and wonderful thing!
