Review of Austin, Texas

The truth vs the hype about Austin
Star Rating - 4/10/2019
The only people who are happy in Austin are its repugnant millionaires. The job market here in virtually any sector besides tech is no better than the rest of the country - but cost of living is waaay higher. The rent on my 350sf studio apartment has gone up THREE times in the past two years and now costs me $1200/mo. Cost of water bill for 1 person averages $70/month. If you own, property taxes will crush your soul, they're nearly the highest in the country. Traffic is a ceaseless nightmare in every inch of Austin, and everything is crowded and ludicrously expensive. Thanks to our ten billion population of fire ants, you'll never be able to sit or even walk on grass if you move here. But don't worry, the four inch long flying Texas roaches and scorpions provide a distraction. Sperling's positive climate rating of Austin makes ZERO sense -- it's between 95 and 115 degrees every single day for SEVEN months out of the year. I can't wait to leave this hellhole.

Natives are out numbered 5 to 1 and all the self-absorbed, overly-entitled, mercenary morons who continue to inundate this once lovely, easy place to live have made it unbearable. The only bright spot is that we were able to cash out big time and get a nice little place in the mountains where the summertime high is 77 degrees. Hasta la vista, Suckers!

I grew up in the Deep South—flying cockroaches inside the house were a weekly event. Since I moved to Austin 7 years ago, I haven’t seen a single one indoors. I’ve had a few encounters with them while sitting under trees at night, but that isn’t something we’d even brave in the south. And I have yet to see a scorpion. Much to my chagrin. Same goes for fire ants. My childhood was one long ant-smothered trauma, but I haven’t had a single bite the entire time I’ve been here! So I dunno what you’re comparing it to, but it sounds pretty hyperbolic to me either way. As for heat...it’s Texas! But the heat here is far more bearable than that of Orlando, New Orleans, Birmingham, etc (the lower humidity makes the difference.) and I dunno how it can be unbearable 7 months out of the year when October, November, March, April and May all have average reps between 70 and 85.

If you are renting, why would property taxes even concern you? Yes, the property tax percentage is higher than some states (Castro Valley California where i lived previously for example), but the housing prices are also lower, so the net property tax is much lower ($5k versus more than $10k in Cali). And you forgot to complain about the exorbitant Texas state income tax (there isn't one!). i am very happy to be living in Austin, and while i am not a millionaire, you might well consider me repugnant! Unemployment is around 3% and cost of living is much lower than California. We sold a 3-BR 1800 sq. ft. home for $975k in the Bay Area and paid $320k for a 3-BR 1925 sq. ft. home in South Austin, 15 minutes away from a major airport. Insects are manageable if you sign up with an ongoing extermination program, and really July and August are the only two months you should be whining about the heat and humidity. That's why we have air conditioning and Barton Springs! Surely, even you will admit that the live music scene here is not eclipsed by any other town or community anywhere. It's part of the DNA. Furthermore, Austin is to microbreweries what Napa is to Cabernet. Be sure to put the Jester King farmhouse brewery and Texas Keeper Cider on your bucket list. Also Salt Lick BarBQ. In all seriousness, with the omnipresent eclectic restaurants and food trailers that engulf the area, the worst thing are the homemade tortillas - because they're so good! i gained 16 lbs. my first 4 months here, and had to change my lifestyle to get my weight down. Or at least my portion size... Besides that, Austin is surrounded by lakes, springs and vibrant small town communities that are easily worth a day trip to explore. And, if all else fails, there is an international airport to whisk you away to the alternative location of your choice.

It all depends on where you have lived previously. Austin's rush hour can be bad but traffic overall is pretty good (e.g. compared to California). The cost of living is reasonable if you are willing to live 10 mins outside the city center. We have been here three years and don't have problems with flying roaches (saw lots in Hawaii) or scorpions. The summer is pretty hellish with the humidity (May-October) but the rest of the year is fine.
