The Good & Bad of Long Beach - 4/22/2023
I have been living in Downtown Long Beach (90802) for 20 years. When I arrived, the City was moving at a decent pace to clean up its Sailor Town-nudie bar image, making improvements here and there. However, it slowed to a snail's pace, and the City struggled to attract a good variety of retail on Pine Street. Then came the 2008 Real Estate Crash, and the Pandemic, throwing a MAJOR monkey wrench in Long Beach's game plan.
After clearing those hurdles, the City hit the acceleration pedal, adding several new multifamily residential developments, Civic Center Plaza, expanding the aquarium, and attracting national chain retail at The Pike. However, Pine Steet, once the heartbeat of the City, still struggles to reach its fullest potential as many storefronts remain empty. The only lively thing on Pine is the restaurants which transform into clubs on weekend nights. Walking the streets of Alamitos Beach gives a person an idea of the grace and charm that formed this community. The Galaxy's blue panels recall the space race, the Current a few miles away is the newest highrise and reflects minimalist gloss with its use of silver steel and shiny glass. Best weather, clean area - 2/17/2008
Long Beach tends to have a bad rep., for good reasons. The City has cleaned up its act over the past 10 years, especially downtown. The streets and sidewalks are kept clean and the City actively enforces Code violations. I originally stayed here because the weather is so much cooler in summer than inland. We also have a lot going on here besides just great restaurants and shopping. I live in the Arts District where there are many small galleries and activities. We also have races of all types - running, biking, boats, and the Grand Prix. It is a big city area so crowding and parking can be problems. I advise you find a place with high owner-occupancy if possible because people tend to be quieter, more respectful of the property, and less likely to cram whole families in small

If your health is a concern...forget living in Long Beach. I've lived here 10 years and will not drink the water, have asthma and have my home professionally cleaned once a week to remove the layer of shlar from the nearby gasoline refineries and port that collects on every horizonal surface in less than 24
