Long Island way overrated - 2/1/2011
I have spent my entire 43 years living on Long Island. In a nutshell, Long Island is overpriced, overcrowded, and just plain overrated. One must sit in traffic to go anywhere. And its getting worse. To venture off the island, it is an easy extra 2 hrs of sitting bumper to bumper going through the NYC burroughs, on any day. If ou are an outdoor enthusiast, forget it. The beaches are nice, yes, but again you will have people on top of your blanket in the summer. It is 1 and 1/2 hours to the nearest area that resembles wilderness, WITHOUT traffic. Double your time coming home in the evening. Sundays can be 3 hrs to go home 70 miles from upstate NY.
Financially, there are really only 2 classes. Rich, or struggling. $100,000 a year salary does not make you comfortable here, trust me. I sold my house 3 yrs ago after refinancing twice just to try to get under control. Everyone I know around my age lives paycheck to paycheck. I will rent until I bolt this area for good in 2013
