As a single person, you will have a difficult time surviving in Manhattan on less than $50,000/year. After 15+ years in the city, I was laid off, then got a job with a city agency (and grateful for it!) for 32K and my rent is now 75% of my income. If you're coming here alone with a pocket full of dreams, make sure your pocket also has at least $5000 in cash to get set up in any semblance of a studio apartment (ie, for $1600/mo - if you can find one - you may need 1st month, 1 month security, 1 month broker fee and utility set up

At the edge of the Upper West Side and Morningside - 6/20/2010
I live at 109th and Broadway, so I am one block south of Morningside Heights, but I might as well be living there. The area is okay and I feel safe here. The neighbors are friendly, but there's a lot of people hanging out on my stoop day and night, which is annoying for my roommate because her room is right above the stoop. Mainly a lot of young guys and older people. It was fine while I was attending Columbia, but now that I'm graduating I'm looking forward to moving to someplace nicer. The area does vary block-by-block. I live across from a public school, so that could be part of the reason why my block is lower income.
