As a single person, you will have a difficult time surviving in Manhattan on less than $50,000/year. I live at 109th and Broadway, so I am one block south of Morningside Heights, but I might as well be living there. The area is okay and I feel safe here. The neighbors are friendly, but there's a lot of people hanging out on my stoop day and night, which is annoying for my roommate because her room is right above the stoop. Mainly a lot of young guys and older people. It was fine while I was attending Columbia, but now that I'm graduating I'm looking forward to moving to someplace nicer.
