Neighborhoods Matter! - 11/10/2011
After reading a few other reviews about Portland, I figured I would throw my own opinion out here. As a native to Portland, I hope I can claim some expertise when it comes to understanding culture here.

In General:
If you are thinking about moving here but do not think it would be a good cultural fit, I would reconsider. Different areas of Portland and its surrounding suburbs offer much more diverse cultural and social opportunities than people normally think of. Generally, suburbs or areas of Portland that are close to the city center tend to have a very predominant culture whereas further out suburbs are less defined.

Portland (and adjacent areas) complicated zoning & - 4/22/2011
I was born in Portland Oregon and have lived nearly all my life in its vicinity here. I love my this area. It has the beautiful Oregon Coast and the Cascade Range (with Mt. Hood) about 90 minutes away. And you have the high desert area of Oregon 3 hrs away. However, with every love relationship there are always some undesirable aspects that we choose to tolerate in a relationship.

In regards to Portland, Beaverton, Gresham, Washington County, Clackamas County and some adjacent cities that "undesirable" aspect is its complicated land use and zoning requirements. The average unsuspecting individual who takes on the challenge of establishing a new business in a vacant building, creating a new building, modifying an existing building may find their "dreams" coming to a screeching halt. Being unaware of the complexity of the areas land use laws, zoning requirements, conditional use permit requirements, design review requirements, building permit requirements, etc. has Read More
