West Philadelphia-Germantown-Mt. Airy-Chestnut Hil - 8/19/2007
I grew up in West Philadelphia, along Cobbs Creek Parkway, which includes University City despite what most people are led to think:) There is a dramatic difference between the neighborhood that I experienced and now-unfortunately. My block was very close knit and took pride and responsibility for their homes. Saturdays in particular had everyone out in the morning sweeping, talking, etc. However, once people started to retire and leave, the houses were sold to buyers who clearly have no idea -nor perhaps cared to know how to maintain a home.

I have since moved to the Germantown section of the city and while similar problems are here as well in terms of maintenance, I love the ability to not leave the neighborhood if I do not want to. There is a grocery cooperative, entertainment, strong although divided neighborhood associations representing East and West Mt. Airy.
