McDowell County is one of the poorest counties in the United States located in southwestern West Virginia near its border with Kentucky. Its economy has been traditionally based on coal production but due to recent drops in demand for this resource , McDowell now emphasized outdoor recreation opportunities instead . These are mainly centered around Big Bear Lake which provides camping , boating , fishing , swimming etc for visitors to enjoy .
