Lincoln, NE

Nice bigger town, with lots to offer.
- 6/8/2006
We lived here for about three years, and we did really like it. The people are pretty friendly. What I loved was there is a lot to do with children. The downtown museum for children is wonderful. The libraries are very good, we have lived in a lot of places and some bigger cities did not have the kind of libraries or the quality that these have, the best one being downtown. There were several play buildings at parks that contained a huge indoor play gym (like the ones at Mickey Ds) It is nice when it is raining outside, and only cost several dollars to get in.

The city does a lot for it own as well. When I could not get a job, the city put me a program and paid for college. What a great deal!

The house prices are pretty good, there is a lot of split level design in this area. This and ranches. It is easy to get around downtown. The downtown has several good restaurants, and on weekends they have a farmers market that is just out of this world.

Everyone here is a Husker fan, be prepared to hear it on the radio when a game is playing; everywhere! (including at the grocery store) That and see an ocean of red as everyone will wear it. These are a proud bunch.

The crime was a little bit out of control. We had our car radio stolen out of our car in daylight in our driveway. That and our truck was stolen as well. Even living in Dallas, we never had this many problems. The police seemed to be on top of it as far as that goes.

Other then that it is a nice place to raise a family.

Denton, TX

Denton: its good and bad
- 4/29/2006
We lived in Denton for about 3 years. It is a nice size about 100,000 or so. There is a lot of urban sprawl, which most of TX has. The cost of living is really low. Houses can be just down right dirt cheap. It is a college town, which is nice too. There are several good colleges in the area. Along with some Tech schools. Good places to eat are Chop Sticks. This is near the college, and is a local hang out for the college students, but is really the best place in town to eat. Other then that you can find small mexican places that are very good and very cheap. The big place to live is at the Providence. This is a new neighborhood that has pools, lakes and lots of parks, but expect to pay out of the nose for taxes. Lots of foreclosures in this area due to the overwhelming high heat bills (ours was 620.00 in one month! Not a payment carry over from the last month, this is just one month. Everyone has this to deal with in this area)

People are very friendly and nice. The schools are good. Coming from the North it was hard to get use to the very hot summers. The land is very flat, and there are not a lot of trees. Watch out for those fire ants, and they are everywhere! Cockroaches can be a problem too. In the north they only come around if you are very dirt, here it can be a problem for anyone. We just couldn't adjust to the way of life, and missed the snow. But, for some this is really a place one could really like. I do miss several things; you cannot get good mexican food like this in the north or east. Central Market is a chain food store, somewhat like Whole Foods, but with much more variety. The bakery there is to die for. If you don't mind the heat (tar roads can have a liquid state I read on a joke somewhere, falls true) hate snow, and like new things, you will really like it here.

Appleton, WI

Do NOT like it here
- 4/24/2006
We have lived here in the Appleton area now for over a year and are working on getting out of here.

First the good things; there is some urban sprawl, so you can find some newer stores and houses. It is easy to get around, and is a smaller/city so the crime is not as bad as a large city. The springs can be nice.

Now the bad, living in New England most of my life, I know us NEs can be aloof. This is ten times worse then there. The people on average are very rude! Salespeople are snobs. People will cut you off without thought. It is an all man for himself way of life.

The driving is scary here. First if you do go on the highway expect to be tailgated in all areas, I have seen more speeding then anywhere else, yet there are never any police around. When we lived in Chicago, I saw a lot of speeding, but there were always police pulling someone over. That and there are a LOT of drunk drivers. Speaking of, I have never seen more bars in all my life. A small town of Kaukauna 16000 people. I counted 11 bars in the small downtown area, this does not include the outside area. 5 bars on one block.

The schools are AWFUL! The scores are unreal. My son is SO far behind now.

Watch out where you live here also. They like to mix factories right next door to neighborhoods. Some of the plants release a God awful sulfur smell that is putrid and can drift several towns over. The pollution is another thing, and don't drink the water. There is tons of cancer producing radon in the soil, so this can be another concern.

People who live here DO NOT like outsiders. They have lived here all their lives and do not know any better.

If you like the packers, you like to drink and hunt, shooting anything that moves. This is the place for you.

Green Bay, WI

GreenBay~ last comments were so funny!!!
- 4/12/2006
I am SO glad I am not the only one! I pretty much grew up in New England and you know how we can be a bit stand off-ish. We are living in Appleton and they are 10X worse. Just rude people. At least in NE when we drove we had a bit of "waving someone in" these people will just cut you right off! Or when you do let them in, not even a wave, or a thank you. We have lived all over the country, and this is right up there with the worst. And the drinking, OMG, we went into a town of say 10,000 people, we counted 11 bars in the very small downtown, like a bar, a store, a bar. WHY? Do you need that many bars? We stay off the roads on weekends. We are counting the days to get out of here!!!

Worcester, MA

Disagree with good schools in the country, Worcest
- 4/12/2006
That whole area has the WORST schools in the country. Yes, great colleges, but the test scores are at the very bottom. Check out greatschools.com for examples.
