Thief River Falls, MN

It's a great fit for some - 1/19/2022
I grew up here and came back for 10 years as an adult. There are jobs to be had with decent wages, but few large employers. This works out fine if you like what you're doing enough to stay there for a few decades, but if that's not the case, you could run out of good options after just a few moves. The cost of living is reasonable and working families can afford homes. The crime rate is relatively low, but drugs are a real problem, particularly with younger folks. Most entertainment revolves around kids' sports, local sports, or city league/bar sports. Other activities include fishing, hunting, boating or kayaking, and snowmobiling. The summers are pretty nice and severe weather is limited. The winters are extremely harsh and the air hurts your face. Downtown has several empty storefronts but there are folks actively working to bring in businesses and revitalize that area. Shopping is fairly limited, but the stores that are there do work hard to have what people need. The schools have a decent reputation and supposedly it's one of the best areas in the state for kids in special ed programs. If you can do factory work or customer service for the duration of your career, enjoy attending local sporting events or bars, can keep yourself entertained, and are ok with 6 months of winter/almost winter, then this could be home sweet home.
