White Trash Haven

Judi - are you from Idaho?? Liberal does not equal trashy. Spokane has endured an economic slump every since Kaiser Aluminum closed in the late 70s. The city has definitely declined from when I lived there and unfortunately you see it most along the main thoroughfares like Maple Street, BUT North Spokane - South Hill, Spokane Valley, Indian Trail are safe, beautiful, well-cared for, the downtown has been revitalized, Amazon is building a 2 MILLION SQ FT facility that will hire 1500 people -- it is starting to make a comeback. Definitely backward compared to large cities -- Spokane Valley is chock-full of conservatives who love our current POTUS. I live in Portland and I find Spokane to be pretty conservative, nice but conservative and limited viewpoint unless they've lived somewhere else or travel out of the city.

Downtown is a homeless convention center! - 10/30/2018
Your remarks are inaccurate, judgemental and racist at best. Liberal values include concern for the well-being of everyone - even you. I doubt you can say the same about me.

Homeless has become rampant in just about every city in this country. Get your facts straight: two major causes: people who make what used to be a middle class income cannot afford to live or live paycheck to paycheck - all it takes is ONE major crisis to cause someone or a family to become homeless. this has been like actual front page news. it's not a secret.
Reason#2 - Roughly 40% of people on the street are not mentally and emotionally capable of functioning without housing, medication and other support. They have verifiable mental or physical disabilities not of their own choosing, including veterans who kill themselves because the government doesn't see fit to get them the counseling they need or pay them well enough or provide enough quality medical care after they return. It's not drug and alcohol abuse, although if you're on the street you get by any way you can.

Maybe you should go down to a homeless shelter and talk to the staff, learn the facts about what they see, every day what works and what doesn't work, what it's like to listen to these stories, to see people who CANNOT work and never will suffer needlessly and people who through no fault of their own lost everything they worked for and ended up on the street - instead of shooting your mouth off about something you clearly have never actually tried to learn about.

Moving, please read & advise

My family has lived in Spokane for over 30 years. The meth problem is real, HOWEVER, there are good schools and tons of good family living, esp in NW Spokane. As you can see from the unemployment rate, folks are on the poor side. You find a job, you hang on to it for dear life. TONS and tons of outdoor activities that you're used to, lots of free stuff for families, etc. People are somewhat conservative and life-timers lack ambition having not been exposed to any other perspectives and a sluggish job market, but things are changing for the better there. The problem with west coast living up there is the cost. You will pay 40% to 50% above the national average to live in Seattle or Portland - ID more affordable. Boise might be a good choice - the rest of the state not so much. I live in Portland and prices have skyrocketed beyond belief. Cost of living is 40% higher for EVERYTHING. It's a great town but will soon drive out people like me. Spokane is still very affordable - but start looking now bc everybody over here on the west coast is starting to migrate there. I'm seeing higher priced homes on Zillow than I've ever seen before for Spokane. If you know for a fact you're moving, I would consider buying now and moving your family while you commute. The amenities you need for work re: technology are there in Spokane too.

re:
Are there any AFFORDABLE places to live i - 9/23/2018
Housing continues to rise here. Be aware; it's not only the cold, it's the lack of sunshine you will notice most. Port Angles/ Squim have more sunshine year round. The eastern part of the state has more sun, access to lakes and more affordability. You can find something afforadable in Pugent sound, but having lived in the Sun Belt for 20 yrs then moving to Portland OR, I can tell you the lack of sun gets to me.

I've been living in Portland OR after 25 years in Dallas, TX and I agree with your assessment. I am part of a small community that is nice, I love the honesty here - you can drop your sunglasses at the park and they will still be there when you go back to look - THE NATURE is heavenly but I miss the sun and I miss a strong economy with nice wages. Are you still loving Austin? The cost of living in PDX is high and I will never be able to buy a home here.

Can someone update this for 2018? How has growth impacted Georgetown? Still reasonable housing, etc.?
