Gaylord, MI

The Wonderful Gaylord, MI!! - 4/17/2008
I have been living in Gaylord, Michigan for nearly 15 years now and I personally think it is an amazing area! Gaylord is a tourist town and in the Winter the population increases dramatically with snowmobilers. In the Summer, golfers. The cost of living here is affordable, however the jobs here are limited. Over the last 5 or so years, two major companies closed down and close to 500 people lost their jobs. Over the years I have lived here, I have not once heard of any violent crimes, other than break-ins and theft. You will find that anywhere, though! Everyone here is very friendly and people seem to keep to themselves. Of course it is a smaller town, everyone seems to know everyone which can be good or not so good. The school system here is one of the best. I personally loved my years while in school and hope one day my children can attend them. Gaylord is a wonderful place to raise a family if you like smaller towns. There is not so much to do here, though. We have one state park here, where you can swim, fish, boat, bike etc. We have many campgrounds to camp, we have several golf courses, hotels, grocery stores and beautiful scenery. Our climate here varies. In the Summer, we sometimes see it in the high 90's with much rain. Our Winters are very cold and get anywhere between 100-150 inches of snow. Our hospital is very nice, we have many nursing homes/assisted living homes, many restaurants, one bowling center, an ice rink/swimming center open year round and several bars. We do not have a mall. The closest one is an hour and fifteen minutes away, in Traverse City. Many people who live here say it is a boring place to live and cannot wait to move away! But, for those of you who like to live "simply" and like a calm, relaxed atmosphere, Gaylord may be the place for you! I should also add that Gaylord is much bigger than what it was when I first moved here. There is always some kind of construction going on and it is constantly, slowly, getting bigger.
