Kenton, OH | 12 Review(s)

Have been retired for a few years, but still quite active. We've been fixing up an old Victorian Italianate (built in 1848), so I've been quite busy with all types of work, inside and outside the house. I enjoy fishing, reading, and traveling back roads. We have 2 adult daughters, one is still living in Texas. We are dog lovers and we prefer peace and quiet, and no traffic.

Garden Plain, KS

Good town for family living - 1/5/2024
GP is small, less than 1000, but it has the essence of small town living. Housing is a bit expensive, but the town and the people are very neighborly and friendly. There is relatively low poverty (about 4%), but when someone needs help, there are a lot of people willing to help. It is very peaceful, not many stores of any kind, but not far from Wichita (about 10 miles). The schools are good, individual teachers are very good. It's nice to not have traffic and people are very law abiding.

Batesville, AR

Very nice town - 11/4/2023
I moved to Ark 9 years ago to Hot Springs Village. I've visited a lot of places over those 9 years and I really like the state overall. If I didn't live in HSV, I would live in Batesville. It's a nice small town, friendly people, nice feel when walking around. I love the atmosphere, and having Lyon College here is a bonus. So many scenic areas in a 60 miles radius, larger towns close by if you need one, but Batesville has the atmosphere I like and the people I enjoy visiting with. If I decide to leave HSV, I would move here.

re:
Hot Springs Village-Don't live here!
- 10/31/2022
We moved here in 2014, and things were not as bad as described above. Twiggs is long gone (he was brought in to help turn the situation around) and we have very qualified people in the POA as well as on the POA board and our Village manager is top notch.
The murders involved those not living here and were disgruntled relatives. Nothing like that has happened in the last 8 years we've been here. The streets are clean, well kept, and we love it here. Tony moved to Illinois and he hates it there as well. Our problem now is we are gaining population faster than I like (I'm selfish) but our POA have plans in place and are following them to manage our continuing growth. I love the peace and quiet, the beauty of the entire area, our neighbors, our view (while others love living next to one of our lakes or next to one of our golf courses). We aren't perfect, but we sure are a great place to be.

Not perfect, but very close - 10/31/2022
We bought a lot in 1991, finally got to move here in 2014. We bought an existing house, but still have our lot. HSV is a great place to live, especially as a retiree. We live on a ridge with a great view to the south (east and west), love our privacy, the beauty of this place, our neighbors, our friends, and the overall atmosphere.
Note: the "disagree" numbers are from trolls who resent those of us who moved here from other states. The one negative voter should have followed up because Twiggs has been gone for quite a while and we have some great leadership in place with our POA employees and our POA board. Is everything perfect?? Of course not, but it's a far better place than just about anywhere else, and we've lived on both coasts, and several states in between over the last 60 years. My only complaint now is we are growing too fast (I'm selfish and don't want to share) but we have good people in place to deal with our growth and have a very good plan for the future. Our family members (scattered across the US) love coming here, and they really hate to leave here, wishing they could stay longer. Several have plans to retire here as well.

keep browsing
- 12/8/2021
I totally disagree with "keep" but I see this was done 9 years ago. If everyone is paying the same price for gas, groceries, etc, then the students aren't being singled out as "keep" suggests. Small town living is sometimes a bit more expensive as items have to be trucked in. "keep" sounds like a spoiled brat who has a high opinion of themselves as a grad student, and I'm sure most people in Commerce were glad this one has left. Commerce is friendly, neighbors help neighbors, and there are plenty of things to do (and if you don't know, just ask someone for information... I've always been treated nicely while in Commerce. I had several classmates who went to "East Texas State" and it was a nice friendly campus. I know several people in the area and it's always nice to be greeted while "downtown" and several of the various store employees also say HI. It's a good family town, and it's easy to relax and take it easy .... well except for Friday night football... LOL...

re:
Quality of Life Cautions in Commerce
- 12/8/2021
What this person is saying is true for any where, check things out or ask about things before signing a contract. Commerce is a nice town, pretty close-knit, so it takes a while to get to know people. I lived in the area for years, and visited Commerce frequently, and I always liked the town. I know several people there and they are all good people, willing to help neighbors when needed, and what I liked was being greeted when out and about in various stores, even though I wasn't an actual resident.
I'm retired in the hills, but I wouldn't mind living in Commerce either.

Longview, TX

re:
Longview...The Best of East Texas
- 2/22/2021
I've lived in Texas for over 50 years and Longview is one of the good places to be. I've been all over East Texas over those years, and Longview is a favorite of mine. The problem with the whiny ones is that they want to be outside the norm and nobody can tell them anything. My suggestion... move to California where you will fit in. If you are a Texan and an American, Longview is a good place to be. Every place is a choice, and not every place is willing to let people live outside the law or be against things that are basically normal. If you want to be weird, move to Callie land

Longview, TX

re:
I have lived in Longview or just outside - 2/22/2021
Every place has it's good points and bad points, but overall, Longview is a good place to live, visit, and enjoy the people (most of whom are very welcoming, friendly, and proud to be Texan). There are always a few who aren't happy because they can't do what they want, when they want, because they are outside the laws of the land as well as not being legal. Those whiny malcontents need to move to California where they can fit in.

Winnsboro, TX

Great little Texas town - 2/21/2021
I've been in and out of Winnsboro quite a bit over the years, and I totally disagree with the person who states Winnsboro people are mean. I've found this to be a very welcoming town, people are friendly and offer to help, even if they don't know you. I've lived in Tx most of my life (Dallas, Plano, Parker, Waco, Victoria, Andrews, and Sherman) and Winnsboro rates at the top. I've lived in other states (Ohio, Kansas, Washington, New Jersey, and now Arkansas) and Winnsboro people are still the best. I currently live in a gated community in central Arkansas, but if I returned to Texas as a retiree, I would put Winnsboro at the top of my list of places to consider.
It's a great little town, good people, and the scenery outside of town is pretty good too.

re:
I should Never Have Moved Here!
- 7/28/2020
Old news. Those of us who wanted change voted in board members who followed the resident's lead, not the "manager" who is now gone. Joseph is one of those people who like to complain, but never offers to work to make things better. Villagers are encouraged to be a part of what is going on, and if you don't like something, then get involved to help fix it. There are families from all 50 states and 16 foreign countries, and our population continues to grow... so of course, you are always going to get complainers.

Golfers paradise
- 7/28/2020
There are a lot of trolls who hate the Village, most of them live outside the Village and resent those of us who did not grow up in Arkansas. Over 90% of those living here are retirees, but not all of us are rich, which seems to be the consensus of those not living here. I've own property since 1991 and moved here 6 years ago, finally able to retire and try to relax. You can do as much as you want or as little as you want, it's your call. There are over 200 various clubs to just about satisfy everyone. I love it here, glad we finally got located here, and I plan to be buried here

Jefferson, TX

Would love to live in or around Jefferson - 9/11/2013
My wife and I have visited Jefferson several times, staying in various B&Bs for our anniversary. We like the small town feel, and have found that most in Jefferson are very friendly, easy to chat with, and have a favorable outlook towards their town. We love East Texas, but my wife does have problems with the heat. Just heard the Pride House burned down, and we were sorry to hear that, as that was the first B&B we stayed when we started visiting Jefferson. I really enjoy the "down home" feel to the place and I would love to move back to Texas and Jefferson would be my first choice. Hopefully in the near future, we can make that happen.
